There’s a subtle danger in our walk with YHWH God. One that often hides behind good intentions. It’s the temptation to measure our faith by how we feel instead of what we know to be true. In a world that prizes emotional highs and spiritual experiences, believers can easily confuse emotion with faith, and spiritualism with truth.
But Scripture reminds us that faith is not a feeling; it’s a conviction.
Faith begins and grows through the Word, not through emotional excitement or mystical experiences. Feelings can be beautiful gifts, but they are unreliable guides. They rise and fall like waves, while Truth stands firm like the shore.
When Feelings Become the Compass
We live in a world that tells us to “follow your heart,” “trust your feelings,” and “listen to your emotions.” But Scripture tells us something very different: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7
And if we’re honest, many believers struggle not with unbelief, but with misplaced belief, trusting their feelings more than YHWH’s Word.
Feelings are real. Feelings are powerful. But feelings are not reliable. Faith is.
Today, I want to talk about the difference between faith and feeling, and why Scripture calls us to anchor our lives in Truth; not emotion, not experience, not spiritual highs, but the unchanging Word of YHWH.
Faith Is Rooted In God’s Word, Not Human Emotion
Paul tells us plainly: “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” – Romans 10:17
Faith is not born from:
- goosebumps
- tears
- excitement
- atmosphere
- emotional intensity
Faith is born from Truth.
Biblical faith is a response to what YHWH has said, not to what we feel in the moment.
Emotions fluctuate. Truth does not.
The Danger of Emotionalism: When Feelings Pretend to Be Faith
Emotionalism is not the same as emotion. Emotion is a gift; YHWH created it. Emotionalism is when emotion becomes the measure of spirituality.
Scholars warn that emotionalism:
- imitates spirituality without producing holiness
- creates spiritual instability
- leads believers to chase experiences instead of Yeshua Messiah
- makes people doubt their salvation when emotions fade
- opens the door to manipulation and deception
The prophet Jeremiah said: “The heart is deceitful above all things…” (Jeremiah 17:9)
If the heart is deceitful, then feelings cannot be our compass.
The Danger of Undiscerning Spiritualism: When Experiences Replace Scripture
John gives us a command that is often ignored in emotional or experiential environments: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits…” (1 John 4:1)
Why? Because not every spiritual experience is from YHWH.
Paul warned the Corinthians not to chase “another spirit” (2 Corinthians 11:4). He knew that spiritual experiences, when detached from discernment, can lead to deception. The Spirit of God never bypasses the Word of God. He never manipulates, never confuses, and never demands performance. He leads gently, always toward holiness and truth.
Emotionalism can mimic the Holy Spirit’s presence but lack His power. Spiritualism can promise revelation but deliver confusion. But faith—real, steady, Scripture‑anchored faith—produces peace, obedience, and endurance.
Paul warned the Corinthians that they were tolerating:
- “another Jesus”
- “a different spirit”
- “a different gospel”
2 Corinthians 11:4 For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.
They were spiritually gifted, but spiritually gullible.
The enemy doesn’t always attack with darkness. Sometimes he attacks with imitation.
This is why Scripture—not sensation—must be our standard.
Faith Is Steady; Feelings Are Stormy
Faith is not a mood. Faith is not a spiritual high. Faith is not emotional intensity.
Faith is trust—steady, anchored, enduring trust.
Hebrews 11 describes faith as:
- “assurance”
- “conviction”
- “confidence”
None of those words describe emotion. All of them describe certainty rooted in YHWH’s character.
Faith stands when feelings fall. Faith holds when emotions shift. Faith endures when the heart trembles.
Biblical Examples: Faith Over Feeling
A. Abraham
He didn’t feel like sacrificing Isaac. He didn’t feel like waiting decades for a promise. But he believed in YHWH.
B. David
He wrote psalms of despair, fear, and sorrow, yet he always returned to: “Yet I will trust You.” (Psalm 56:3)
C. Yeshua in Gethsemane
Yeshua (Jesus) felt sorrowful unto death. But He said: “Not My will, but Yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)
Faith chooses obedience even when feelings scream otherwise.
How to Live by Faith, Not Feeling
1. Anchor Yourself in Scripture Daily
Feelings shift. YHWH’s Word does not.
2. Test Every Emotion by Truth
Ask: “Does this align with Scripture?” “Does this lead me toward Yeshua Messiah or away from Him?”
3. Don’t Chase Experiences, Chase Yeshua Messiah
Spiritual highs fade. Yeshua remains.
4. Let the Holy Spirit Lead, Not Your Emotions
The Holy Spirit produces fruit not frenzy. Holiness not hype. Conviction not confusion.
5. Remember That Faith Is a Decision, Not a Sensation
Faith says: “I trust You, Lord, even when I don’t feel You.”
Truth Holds When Feelings Fail
YHWH never asked you to feel strong, He asked you to trust Him. He never asked you to feel brave, He asked you to obey Him. He never asked you to feel spiritual, He asked you to walk with Him. Walk in His ways.
Feelings are fragile while faith is firm.
Feelings are temporary, while faith is eternal.
Feelings fluctuate, while faith anchors.
So today, choose faith over feeling. Choose truth over emotion. Choose Scripture over sensation.
Because when the storm comes—and it will—it’s not your feelings that will anchor you. It’s your faith.
“We walk by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7
So today, test what moves your heart. Ask: Does this draw me closer to Yeshua or to myself? Does it align with Scripture or contradict it? Does it produce holiness or just excitement?
The Spirit’s work is not measured by how high we feel, but by how deeply we love, obey, and endure.
“We walk by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7
Let your faith rest not in the rise and fall of emotion, but in the unchanging Word of God. Because when feelings fade, truth remains and faith stands firm.
YHWH bless you and keep you; YHWH make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; YHWH lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
Numbers 6:24-26
