When we talk about “justification,” many believers think of it as a church word—something theological, something abstract, something distant. But Scripture uses the word in a very real, very practical way. The term “justified” is a legal term, it implies being declared innocent in a court of law.
And that court is not symbolic. It’s the real courtroom of the King. The place where Yeshua (Jesus) Himself will judge every life according to the standard of YHWH’s Law.
That means justification isn’t just a doctrine. It’s our hope. It’s our rescue. It’s our only way to stand before a holy God without fear.
Today, I want to walk us through what justification really means, why it matters, and how it shapes the way we live.
Justification Begins With the Law of YHWH
Every courtroom needs a standard. Every judgment needs a law. In order to have a judgment in a court of Law, you must have a law that is the standard to which a person is compared. That standard is the Law of YHWH (Torah)—the perfect righteousness of YHWH revealed through His commandments and demonstrated perfectly in Yeshua.
This is why sin is so serious. Sin isn’t just a mistake. Sin is a violation of the Law of God. Sin is a crime against the King.
And justification means being declared innocent of those crimes.
Repentance and Forgiveness
Repentance is not optional. It’s the doorway to forgiveness.
Yeshua opened the minds of His disciples to understand the Scriptures—the Law and the Prophets—so they could fully understand the Gospel and preach repentance for the forgiveness of sins to the nations.
“Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.’ Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.’” – Luke 24:44-47
This is our model as well:
- First we begin learning the Law and the Prophets,
- then we recognize our sin and repent, and
- then Yeshua is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.
This is the heart of justification: We turn from sin. We turn toward obedience. And Yeshua declares us innocent.
Not because we earned it—but because we returned to Him.
Forgiveness is our justification.
Hearing the Law Is Not Enough—We Must Do It
Romans 2 is one of the most misunderstood passages in the New Testament, Paul says:
“For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.” – Romans 2:13
This is not Paul contradicting grace. This is Paul explaining grace.
Grace does not erase obedience. Grace empowers obedience.
Grace is not permission to sin. Grace is the power to stop sinning.
Faith without obedience is dead. Obedience without faith is empty.
But faith that produces obedience—that is living faith. That is saving faith. That is justifying faith.
Yeshua Will Judge According to the Law
Matthew 7 gives us one of the most sobering warnings in Scripture. Many will stand before Yeshua saying, “Lord, Lord,” pointing to miracles, ministries, and spiritual activity—but He will say:
“I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.” (Matthew 7:23)
Lawlessness means disobedience to YHWH’s commandments.
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” – Matthew 7:21
This isn’t meant to terrify believers—it’s meant to awaken us. Faith is not a label. Faith is not a membership. Faith is not a feeling.
Faith is loyalty to the King. Faith is obedience to His Law. Faith is a life that reflects His righteousness.
Justification Is Also a Gift of Grace
Here’s the beautiful balance: Obedience is required—but obedience doesn’t earn justification.
Justification is still a gift.
Titus 3:7 says we are “justified by His grace.” Romans 6:23 calls eternal life a “free gift.”
In the Greek, the words grace, gift, favor, and pardon all flow from the same root.
His forgiveness (grace) justifies us, making us Salvation-ready.
So how do we hold these truths together?
- We repent because we fear Him.
- We obey because we love Him.
- We are justified because He forgives us.
Obedience does not replace grace. Grace does not replace obedience. They work together—like heart and breath.
The Scroll of Life and the Final Judgment
Revelation 20 paints a scene that should shape how we live every day. The dead stand before YHWH. The scrolls of their works are opened. The Scroll of Life is opened.
“And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and scrolls were opened. Then another scroll was opened, which is the Scroll of Life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the scrolls, according to what they had done.” – Revelation 20:12
The Scroll of Life is the one that only the righteous are written on, which means those who have been justified by Yeshua Messiah.
“And if anyone’s name was not found written in the Scroll of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” – Revelation 20:15
Those who rejected Yeshua are judged for their sins and cast into the Lake of Fire. Those who belong to Yeshua are not judged for salvation—but they are judged for reward.
Every word. Every deed. Every act of obedience. Every act of disobedience.
All of it matters.
Not for salvation—but for honor in the Kingdom.
“Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 5:19
This is why obedience matters so deeply. This is why justification is so precious. This is why grace is so powerful.
Salvation Is Through Yeshua Alone—But the Path Is Narrow
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” – Matthew 7:13-14
The narrow path is not crowded.
Yeshua said few find it. Not because YHWH hides it, but because few are willing to walk it.
The narrow path is obedience. The narrow path is repentance. The narrow path is loyalty to YHWH’s commandments and faith in Yeshua Messiah.
Revelation describes the saints as those who “keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.” (Revelation 14:12)
Both. Not one or the other. Both.
That is the narrow way. That is the path of justification. That is the road to life.
Stand Innocent Before the Judge
Justification is not complicated, but it is costly.
- It cost Yeshua His blood.
- It costs us our rebellion.
- It costs us our sin.
- It costs us our old life.
But what we gain is everything: Forgiveness. Freedom. Righteousness. Eternal life. A name written in the Scroll of Life.
Justification is God’s declaration over the repentant, obedient, faithful believer: “You are innocent. You are Mine.”
May we walk in that truth—with humility, with obedience, and with joy—until the day we stand before the Judge and hear Him say, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
YHWH bless you and keep you; YHWH make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; YHWH lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
Numbers 6:24-26
